 BART Announces Full Week Pilot of All Day Bike Access
On Thursday, BART announced plans to implement a full week pilot of removing the bike blackout period! During the week of March 18-22, bikes will be allowed on BART at all times of day--including the usually restricted commute hours.
We've heard from members on both sides of the Bay that allowing bikes on BART all day would literally change their life, cutting down commute time so they could spend more time with their loved ones and opening up regional travel by bike.
The March pilot follows on the heels of an August 2012 pilot when bikes were allowed all day during Fridays in August. Using rider feedback, BART has made some adjustments to the upcoming pilot, including retrofitting some cars to allow for more room for bikes, strollers and luggage, and not allowing bikes on the first three cars.
Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will be working with BART and the East Bay Bicycle Coalition to help implement the pilot. City Leaders Show Support for Market Street Bikeway City and community leaders are adding their voices of concern about the continued delay of the Better Market Street project and a new proposal to move bikes from Market Street to Mission Street. Here's what Supervisor John Avalos had to say about the project: "As a regular bike-commuter, I'm excited every time I bike down Market to see the dramatic increase in bicycle traffic year after year...We, as City officials, can't squander this once in a lifetime opportunity to transform San Francisco's main thoroughfare into a vibrant corridor, filled with active and reliable transit, sidewalks full of pedestrians, robust local businesses and safe, separated bikeways." - Supervisor John Avalos "The Better Market Street project should be the best example of improving our streets through creating safer pedestrian and bike access and making thoughtful transit decisions. "The plan should encourage people to make better use of public space and to advance our city's Transit-First policy." - Supervisor Scott Wiener Add your own support for the project here.
Connecting the City Roundup & Big News for Masonic  Through our Connecting the City campaign, the SF Bicycle Coalition is working to create 100 miles of crosstown bikeways - making biking safer and more inviting for you and the people you love. This week, we've got big news to share and ways for you to get involved:
- Masonic - Supervisors Breed, Farrell and Mar, representing the Districts surrounding Masonic Avenue, have reiterated their strong support for the Masonic Avenue Complete Streets project in a letter to the San Francisco County Transportation Authority. The Supervisors outline the importance of the improvements, not only for people on bicycles, but also for pedestrians and car drivers. They also detail the overwhelming community support the project has garnered and their desire to make Masonic a safer corridor. We thank them for advocating on behalf of their constituents for a safer and calmer Masonic Avenue. Continue making a difference and send your own letter of support for this project to city leaders!
- 6th Street - New improvements are on the horizon for this important SOMA corridor. Plans are now being brought forth to the community for 6th Street between Market Street and Howard Street. With improvements on 5th street still a distant possibility, this is a great opportunity to improve the area. We will keep you up to date on the upcoming community meetings as well as any developments.
- Mansell - If you enjoy McClaren Park, make a point of attending the next community meeting on the Mansell Corridor Improvement project on March 19. Mansell Street runs through the park and is well used by cars, transit, bikes and pedestrians. The project is currently in the planning stage and member feedback is the key to making this project a success. Take five minutes to fill out the community feedback form and send it in before Thursday, February 21 at 5 pm. The form is also available in Chinese and Spanish.

In Memory of Diana Sullivan We are deeply saddened by the death of Diana Sullivan, who was killed while biking on 3rd and King streets last Saturday. Your calls and e-mails have let us know that you are also saddened by this tragedy. We are going through a thorough evaluation of the intersection of 3rd and King, as we do for other known dangerous locations, to see what engineering and/or other solutions we will push the City to make. Since last Saturday, we have heard from many of you that the intersection of 3rd and King feels unsafe because the bikeway disappears without warning, forcing you in to fast-moving car traffic. We are bundling this information in to our review of the location and will be sharing our recommendations with you -- and the City -- shortly. We know that the best way for us to honor Diana's life is to step up our efforts that much more to make San Francisco a safe and welcoming place for everyone to bike.
 Register Your School for Bike to School Week, April 22-26
This year Bike to School Day is an entire week of fun! If you're a parent, guardian, teacher, or administrator of a public or private school in San Francisco, you can register your school for the big event!
We are also looking for talented interns to help make this year's Bike to School Week terrific. Back by Popular Demand: More Bike to the Theater Nights Last month, we teamed up with the American Conservatory Theater for our first Bike to the Theater nights. It was wildly successful, and we're partnering again--for the newest play, Dead Metaphor. Two Bike to the Theater Nights on February 28 and March 7. Tube Times Distributors Wanted We're recruiting volunteers to deliver our quarterly newsletter, Tube Times, on an ongoing basis to the following locations: Chinatown Public Library, North Beach Public Library, Citizen Chain, City Lights, Blazing Saddles@Columbus/Francisco and the SF Art Institute@Chestnut.
Duties include picking up the newsletters (at any of three locations) and dropping them off at your assigned shop, every six weeks. In August 2012, BART launched its first pilot to allow bikes on board all day. The pilot, called Bike Fridays, laid the groundwork for the just-announced full-week March pilot. Roll back to last year with this video about the inaugural pilot. While BART has made some changes to the March pilot based on rider feedback, much remains the same. We're still looking for bike riders to be great ambassadors for bikes on BART, by yielding to elderly, disabled and pregnant passengers, not riding the escalators, and keeping entrances and exists free. 6:30pm | Fulton and Larkin Crowdtilt is all about enabling group funding. And for the February Startup Bike SF ride they are all about enabling group funning! We'll do a 1 & 1/2 hour ride to the Crowdtilt offices. There we will find beer, snacks and a Crowdtilt all comers challenge to flip cup. Light refreshments will be provided. Saturday, February 23rd San Francisco to Pt Reyes Hostel Overnight Bike Ride
9am | Leaving from the Fell Street Statue at the Panhandle Join fellow SF Bicycle Coalition members Michael Kohn and Rocky Beach for an overnight 50-mile each way scenic bike trip to Point Reyes Hostel Saturday night. This will be about a 5-hour ride with some decent climbing. After a night enjoying the serenity, we'll be back on our bikes to make the 50-mile journey back to San Francisco on a slightly different route to keep it interesting.
The bike tour is free for SF Bicycle Coalition members but you are responsible for the $25 hostel fee and money needed to share meals. Co-ed dorm sleeping and hostel provides the bedding. This bike tour is for those who are capable of pedaling 50+ miles including hills and carrying gear. Space is very limited. Must RSVP at sfbike.org/rsvp. Love Your Lanes Bike Ride - Chinatown, Downtown and Polk Street
1pm-4pm | Meet in front of Ferry Building main entrance Join the SF Bicycle Coalition for a District 3 Love Your Lanes neighborhood bike ride and mingle. We are putting together a survey bike ride through all the District 3 neighborhoods and want you to join. You can help us evaluate how effective recent improvements have been and identify what work we still need to do.
As the people who ride these streets everyday, you know them best. We know you have ideas about what would make your commute better, so let's hit the streets together and talk about these areas.
