SF's Most Dangerous Intersection One Step Closer to Safety  Big news for street safety: California's Attorney General, Kamala Harris, just gave permission for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to install a camera at Market and Octavia to prevent drivers from making the dangerous and illegal right turns onto the highway. The intersection of Market and Octavia is the most dangerous in the the city for people walking and biking, and your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has been leading the charge for a safer Market/Octavia for years.
In response to several life-threatening crashes in 2007, we requested the SFMTA install a camera to enforce the illegal and dangerous right turn. The City Attorney's Office claimed it was unable to install a camera without legislative action, so we focused our efforts to pass a bill to allow it. Though the bill was passed, it was vetoed by then-Governor Schwarzenegger. So, Assemblymember Ammiano elevated the leal question to the Attorney General in January of 2011.
Then, on December 17, 2012, the Attorney General finally responded, and affirmed what the SF Bicycle Coalition has believed all along: that the SFMTA is legally allowed to install the camera. We will continue to advocate that the SFMTA moves swiftly to install the camera enforcement that San Franciscans have asked for. How are the Fell Street Changes working for you?  After years of our members' support and advocacy, the SFMTA began striping the Fell Street bikeway at the end of 2012. Thanks to all of you who helped make it happen! The entire project—which will include physical barriers in the buffer area, bulbouts, and changes to Oak Street—will be completed in phases over the coming months and the SF Bicycle Coalition will keep you posted about when you should expect to see additional changes.

Welcome New Supervisors  Today is inauguration day at City Hall, and we're looking forward to working with all of the newly sworn-in Supervisors. A hearty congratulations to our strong partners who were re-elected—Supervisors Eric Mar, David Chiu, David Campos and John Avalos.
And a big welcome to the Board's newest members, Supervisors London Breed and Norman Yee. Throughout the campaign trail, these new leaders consistently spoke in favor of bicycle improvements in their Districts and are committed to improving the safety of San Francisco's streets for people biking and walking.
The SF Bicycle Coalition looks forward to representing you, our members, and continuing our advocacy with all of these leaders. We encourage you to let them know how important more bikeways are to you—find your supervisor, and let them know how they can improve your ride and safety today.
Bike to the Theater Nights with A.C.T. and SF Bicycle Coalition Looking for a great night out with your bike? The American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) and the SF Bicycle Coalition have partnered to bring you two Bike to Theater Nights. Polk Street Survey is Still Open Polk Street changes are under works and we need you, our members who live, work or spend time on Polk Street, to speak up for the kinds of transportation changes you'd like to see. And welcome back to re-elected incumbents, including John Calaway, Amandeep Jawa, Lenore McDonald, Lainie Motamedi and Zack Stender. They'll join the other 7 Board members who were elected last year. 10am push off | meet at Velo Rouge Cafe, Arguello @ Cabrillo The streets in the northwest corner of San Francisco are getting friendlier for biking and walking in ways both subtle and dramatic -- parklets, traffic circles, wider bike lanes, new bike lanes, multiuse paths, raised crosswalks, bulbouts, smooth pavement, and much more are arriving in the Richmond District and upper Presidio every day. Come out and take a rolling look at what's sprouting on the streets of the great northwest, and learn how it's happening, thanks to the work of public agencies and active citizens like yourself.
SF Bicycle Coalition recreational rides are free for SFBC members (a $5 donation from non-members is appreciated); rain cancels rides.
