White Walls Presents: "The New Race" New Works by D Young V Show Preview: Part 1 of 2 Please Contact Tova with Inquiries RSVP to the Event White Walls is pleased to present The New Race, new works by D Young V. The show will be a culmination of the themes Young has been working on for several years, portions of which were shown at Gallery 3 in late 2010 and at White Walls in the summer of 2011. The opening reception will be Saturday, January 12th, from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through February 2nd, 2013. The New Race expands on the predominately black and white style D Young V is known for, presenting all full-color images, finished with more detailed compositions than any work the artist has previously shown. A deeper foray into 3-d works allows the artist to further the ideas of his complex narrative. A variety of re-appropriated objects will be made to appear as though they have been taken out of D Young V’s vision of a post-apocalyptic world. Automatic rifles, helmets, ammo boxes, a fully functional flame thrower and a collaborative automobile with Eddie Colla, will all function as a gallery sized installation, involving a mural that will encompass every wall and much of the floor in the gallery. The New Race is heavy on collaboration, using the styles of distinctly known artists, including John Felix Arnold III, ROTD, Eddie Colla, Hugh Leeman, Ivan Grianti, and FilthGrime, to contribute to D Young V’s narrative in unique ways. From the Artist: “'The New Race' is a fairly lose term to define the concept of my show. The term itself is more of an implication to allow the viewer’s mind to wander into the possibilities of not only where we may be going as a society or culture but also as a species. My work as always worked on the loose premise of a 'post-apocalyptic' world. Each installment thus far has been an exploration of the people, languages and aesthetic of that world. 'The New Race' will continue in that vein, only stepping further into the implications of genetic engineering, cloning, human reproduction, the biological fusion of technology as a natural part of our evolution, and question notions of racial and cultural identity in this new hypothetical world.” D Young V is a highly skilled pen and ink artist. Heavily influenced by wheat-paste and graffiti culture, his monochromatic drawings are so graphic, they could even be mistaken as a stencil from afar. With a closer look, the extent of his penmanship becomes obvious. His line work is meticulously detailed, illuminating every stroke and process of the piece. D Young V has a BFA in fine arts from Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY and a MFA in painting from the Academy of Art, San Francisco, CA. He currently lives and works in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. Shooting Gallery Presents: "Winter Group Show" 2013 Shooting Gallery is pleased to present the last Winter Group Show to be held in the current gallery at 839 Larkin, before our big move to a newly renovated building. Helping us go out with a bang will be a great lineup of many of our beloved artists, including Ferris Plock, Casey Gray, APEX, Michael Page, Aaron Nagel, John Felix Arnold III, Hugh Leeman, Jet Martinez, C215, Ernesto Yerena, Morgan Slade, Spencer Keeton Cunningham, Adam Rozan, Lauren Napolitano and Bryan Schnelle. All of whom have shared a part in shaping the space into what it is today. The growth and success of the Shooting Gallery is a testament to the talent we’ve been honored to work alongside and the support that the incredible arts community of San Francisco has provided. Join us for the opening reception Saturday, January 12th, from 7-11pm. The exhibit will be open to the public for viewing through February 2nd, 2013. The Winter Group Show will not only commemorate the past ten years of Shooting Gallery, but celebrate what’s to come, with a look at new work by artists committed to originality. Since its inception in 2003, the Shooting Gallery has seen a decade of change, in the progression of our artists, in the slow and steady transformation of the tenderloin district, and in the evolution of the gallery family. Throughout the years one consistent intention has been to provide a space where artists are able to expand their creative practice with exhibitions and installations marked by a no holds barred freedom of expression. The artists which will be represented in the Winter Group Show showcase the wide variety of innovative forces at work in today’s contemporary market. "REFLECTED" by APEX at 941 Geary has been extended and will be open by appointment through January 12th, 2013. Save the date for the following Saturday, January 19th, as "While We Were Away," a group show curated by Tova Lobatz, opens at 941 Geary! We look forward to seeing you at the galleries! | | |
