New Market/Valencia Turn

Tired of racing across two lanes of traffic and negotiating rail tracks to turn left from Market Street to Valencia Street? You don't have to anymore now that the city has installed a left turn pocket and bicycle signal to help you make that turn calmly and safely. The SF Bicycle Coalition helped champion this project in 2009 and are thrilled to see it on the ground. Since this is a new design treatment in San Francisco and the specific intersection has some design challenges - we're eager to get feedback from our members. How is it working for you? See our project page for more information and a survey.

Keep Us Pedaling Strong into 2013

This year, your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition fought hard to win you safer bikeways on Fell and Oak streets, Masonic Avenue, 17th Street and to get you smoother pavement across the city. And we're gearing up for even bigger campaigns this year. But we can't do it without you.

There's still huge opposition to bicycle safety improvement. So as we get ready to pedal into 2013, we need your help. Please give a year-end donation to the organization that brings you safer streets, better bikeways, and makes your ride smoother, safer, and more dignified.

Your membership dues give us a strong voice at City Hall but it doesn't give us the resources to fight this opposition to the bike projects you want and deserve. How much are safe streets and a vibrant city worth to you? $25, $50, $100, $250? Help us keep up the momentum, with a donation to our year-end campaign.

Community Workshop: Bike Theft in San Francisco

Please join the SF Bicycle Coalition, in partnership with SFPD, SF SAFE and Google, at a Community Workshop to discuss bike theft in San Francisco. Come hear from an SFPD investigator what the police are already doing to combat bike theft. Learn how you can do to prevent theft, including in residential garages. And we will discuss how we can harness San Francisco's innovative community to help reduce bike theft overall. After the presentations, the community will work to share new innovations and ideas on how to prevent theft.

Mon., Dec. 10 | 6-8pm | Google SF - 345 Spear Street. Valet Bike Parking is provided, and please RSVP at sfbike.org/theft.

Thanks for Making it a Fantastic Winterfest!

A big warm thank you to the 1,200+ members and friends that joined us on Sunday for another great Winterfest! Special thanks to the 180+ hard-working volunteers, the 51 talented artists, and the 160+ generous sponsors who helped make the event possible! This year's event was truly one for the history books!

If you are a lucky winner of an auction item, you will be notified this week via email on your totals and pick up schedule. Please do not call us, as we are busy sorting and organizing for a smooth post-auction process. All auction items MUST BE paid for and claimed by December 19, so please make arrangements for this.

There are so many amazing photobooth pictures from this year. Find you and your friends. We look forward to next year's extravaganza and hope you will join us.

Bring Calmer, Greener Streets to your Neighborhood

If you've ever experienced Berkeley's bike boulevards or Portland's neighborhood greenways and wanted to bring them to your street in San Francisco, please come to the SF Bicycle Coalition office (833 Market Street, 10th Floor) on Tuesday, December 11 from 5:30-7pm for a discussion of how to get started.

The SF Bicycle Coalition will be presenting an overview of what San Francisco and other cities have done in the past and present some of our work through our Connecting the City Campaign. The Green Connections team from the Planning Department will also be presenting their draft Citywide network of Green Connections, which includes some potential neighborhood greenways, as well as a toolkit to guide their design.

We want to hear from SF Bicycle Coalition members on what features of calmer neighborhood streets you like most and where you want to see them. Email Neal@sfbike.org if you have any questions.

Vote Today for Our Board of Directors

We need you to cast your vote today in our annual Board of Directors election. This year's election is more competitive than ever. We rely on the voices of our members to decide who will be responsible for ensuring that the SF Bicycle Coalition achieves its mission of promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation by developing the strategic direction of the organization, overseeing management and our financial health, raising funds for our work, and representing us in San Francisco's many communities. Each year, half of the 15-member board is elected to a two-year term by our membership -- that's you. Your vote is an important signal of confidence in the Board. Please read the candidate statements and vote today. Voting ends Wednesday, December 12.

We are one of the few large, member-based organizations that elects our Board of Directors through a member vote. Do your part and vote today! If you have trouble voting, please contact boardvoting@sfbike.org.

The Brooks England Dashing Bicycle Show

On December 8, cruise over to Huckleberry Bicycles and peruse the bicycles and accessories on display for the opening night of the Brooks England Dashing Bicycle Show. This multi-city tour kicks off in San Francisco with guest speaker Grant Petersen of Rivendell, and adult beverages provided compliments of Hendrick's Gin.

We Need Awesome Daytime Volunteers

If you have daytime availability, are detail-oriented and passionate about ensuring your fellow members receive their much-anticipated issue of the upcoming Tube Times, have we got a job for you! We are looking for some super top-notch in-office volunteers to come in and help us get up to speed with some of our data backlog this week and next. If you're available for a three-hour shift in the morning or afternoon, please sign up by emailing margaret@sfbike.org, indicating what day(s) and time(s) you're available. We will reward you with endless gratitude, lavish praise, and tasty snacks. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Video: Hal Grades Your Bike Locking

For this week's video, we dug into the vault for an oldie and goodie about locking your bike. With our bike theft workshop scheduled for December 10 and our increased efforts to get more secure bike parking throughout San Francisco, bike theft is on our brains. So, here's a 2003 Streetfilm with famous NYC bike mechanic Hal Ruzal grading peoples' locking technique. Don't worry if you've been locking like a C-student. Now's your chance to get on the honor roll. See you at the Bike Theft Workshop on December 10. RSVP today!
