Decision on Fell/Oak Appeal Today Today (Tuesday, December 11), the Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the appeal made last month against the Oak and Fell Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project, and we at the SF Bicycle Coalition will be there advocating for these crucial safety improvements. The approval of this project last October was preceded by an extensive community outreach process with hundreds of residents and business owners weighing in on the project and months of environmental review from the Planning Department. The SF Bicycle Coalition is confident in the Planning Department's environmental due diligence and analysis for this project and we expect the Board of Supervisors to affirm the Planning Department's decision. The hearing will be held today at 4 pm at the Board of Supervisors meeting at City Hall, Room 250. If you supported the Oak and Fell Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project in the past, if you are already benefiting from the bikeway taking shape on Fell Street or wish to express your support for safer streets for people who bike and walk in the neighborhood come to the hearing and show your support. The SF Bicycle Coalition is working day-to-day to ensure delays to this project and similar pedestrian and bicycle safety projects aren't delayed. Why We Need You More Now Than Ever Unfortunately, today's Fell and Oak appeal is a reminder that every bike project is still a battle. Each step of the way there are people opposing the safety projects you've asked for, claiming that the streets are fine for biking just as they are. Do you think that? Polk, 2nd, and Market Street are "just fine"? We don't. That's why we'll be speaking up at the hearing today. And on the frontlines of every other fight to win you the safety improvements you deserve. But we can't do it without your financial support. As our projects get bigger, so does the opposition. That's why we need you more than ever. We are asking you to give a special gift of $25, $50, $250 or $5,000 right now to give us the staffing and resources we desperately need to win you a better Market, Polk, 2nd Street and more. Please donate today. We only have two weeks left in our year-end campaign. Last Chance for Members to Vote for Our Board of Directors It's your last chance for SF Bicycle Coalition members to cast your vote today in our annual Board of Directors election. Have you met Amandeep, Carrie, John, Lainie, Lawrence, Lenore, Michael, Rocky, and Zack? They're running for our Board! This year's election is more competitive than ever. We rely on the voices of our members to decide who will be responsible for ensuring that the SF Bicycle Coalition achieves its mission of promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation. Your vote is an important signal of confidence in the Board. Please read the candidate statements and vote today. Voting ends tomorrow -- Wednesday, December 12. We are one of the few large, member-based organizations that elects our Board of Directors through a member vote. Do your part and vote today! If you have trouble voting, please contact boardvoting@sfbike.org. Two Bike Education Classes This Week With the New Year around the corner, it's time to start thinking about your resolutions. And, we've got a great way to start planning: Bicycle Safety Workshops. Get familiar with the rules of the road, how -- and when -- to "Take the Lane," and how to best set up your bicycle for easy, daily life. We have two ways for people to engage, depending on your experience and interest: a one-hour "Intro to Safe Cycling" on Wednesday, or a four-hour "Traffic Skills 101-1" program for those who want to all the details, tips, and best-practicer. Urban Bicycling Workshop: Intro to Safe Biking Wed., Dec. 12 | 6:30-7:30 } The Hamilton (631 O'Farrell) Urban Bicycling Workshop: Traffic Skills 101-1 Thu., Dec. 13 | 5:30-9:30pm | SF Bicycle Coalition Offices (833 Market St. 10th Floor) Both classes are free thanks to funding by the SF Transportation Authority, and you can RSVP at sfbike.org/education today. Take the City's Survey on Potential Polk Street Improvements Did you see the City's exciting proposals for improved bicycle and pedestrian safety on Polk Street last week at the SFMTA Open Houses? If you missed it, you can visit our Polk Street page to take a look at some of the leading ideas and take the City's survey on the options. Your input into the designs is critical right now. When the street is repaved in 2015 (a victory we're proud of working so hard to achieve) it could go back the same way it is today - dis-continous and narrow bikeway, poor pedestrian crossings and an overall unfriendly street to be on. Visit sfbike.org/POLK to see what the future of transportation on Polk Street could look like and speak up!
A Call for Bicycle Ambassadors! We have two excellent upcoming volunteer opportunities for our Bicycle Ambassadors. Our final Light Up the Night station is this Thursday, December 13th, from 5-7PM and we need a few more of our friendly & knowledgeable Bicycle Ambassadors to help educate passersby about our work. If you're a trained Ambassador and are able to help this Thursday evening, please sign up online. Additionally, we'll be holding a Service Station in the Fell & Oak area on Tuesday, Dec. 18th, from 5-7PM. If you're available to help, please sign up here. Thanks for helping spread the good word! Get Festive on the 9th Annual Holiday Lights Bike Ride & Potluck Back by popular demand: On Sunday, December 16th, long-time member, Robin Marks, will be taking you on the 9th annual Holiday Lights Bike Ride and potluck! This is the chance for you to get festive on our lively, annual two-wheelin' pilgrimage to visit some of the city's most stellar light displays. Summon your creative holiday spirit and ring your silver bells, caroling all the way. Bring treats to share for our endpoint potluck. Dress warm, don't forget your bike lights, and heavy rain cancels. Kids are welcome. This will be roughly an 8 mile pedal and moderately strenuous. Meet at the Panhandle Statue at Fell and Baker Streets for sharp departure at 6:30pm. Video: Time-Lapse Winterfest Thanks to our amazing volunteers, this year's Winterfest was the best one yet! We had bike games, a pedal-powered stage, a terrific art auction and 1,200 bike-loving friends in the room. If you missed the event, take a look at this cool time-lapse video that our stellar photographer, Volker Neuman, made of the event. Maybe you'll catch a glimpse of yourself in the video. If not, check out the photobooth photos here.
