Final Chance to Redesign 2nd Street

After months of community meetings and surveys, the SFMTA has narrowed in on the one-way separated bikeway option for 2nd Street, which will add much-needed bike and pedestrian safety improvements to 2nd Street between Market and King streets.

Want to ensure to the street design details meet your needs? Come to a SF Bicycle Coalition bike ride tonight (meet at 2nd at Market at 5:30pm) to learn more about the design. And be sure to attend the City's final community meeting on Wednesday, November 28. See our 2nd Street page for more information.

Work Underway on Fell Bikeway

You may have heard that an appeal was filed against the Fell and Oak Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project. We're happy to report that work on this crucial safety improvement project is nonetheless continuing. Yesterday, crews were out striping the Fell bikeway between Scott and Baker Streets, and we're hoping your ride along these three treacherous blocks is already feeling safer. Please say thank you to the people out working on the bikeway as you ride by!

While work is continuing on the vital safety project, your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will continue to closely watch this project and the appeal (which is not a lawsuit and is extremely common in San Francisco). We know how important this project is for the thousands of people who live, work, bike and walk in this area, and we will continue to update you on the status of the project and any new developments.

The appeal is another reminder that despite years of outreach and community support, it's still a bumpy road to get bike improvement projects moving forward in the support. Your support of our work is needed now as much as ever. Learn more about the appeal and the extensive community outreach and planning that went into this important safety project.

Climate Ride Meet + Greet This Wednesday

Join the SF Bicycle Coalition and Blake Holiday, Ride Director for the Climate Ride, for a casual gathering on Wednesday, November 28, from 6-8pm. Meet veteran riders and hear how they completed the fundraising requirements and pedaled the 5-day, 320-mile bike ride from Fortuna to San Francisco. The Climate Ride raises critical support for bike advocacy, environmental sustainability and more. Don't miss the CA Climate Ride's new date: May 19 -23.

Get a headstart on your fundraising, and bring your questions for Blake, SF Bicycle Coalition members Jenny Shu and Susan Green. This meet + greet is hosted by the SF Bicycle Coalition and will be held at Dolan Law Firm, 1438 Market Street - indoor bike parking provided. RSVP to tracy@sfbike.org.

Welcome to Our New Volunteer Coordinator

Margaret McCarthy just joined the SF Bicycle Coalition staff in November as our full-time Volunteer Coordinator. She comes to us with a wealth of volunteer coordinating experience. Juggling hundreds of volunteers and doing it all with a smile is one of her many strengths. Her bubbly warm personality is sure to bring zest and energy to all our volunteer opportunities. Stop by Volunteer Nights to say hello and welcome Margaret to the team!

Great Job Biking the Vote!

We did it! This election was a huge success for our bike-friendly candidates and ballot measures! Seven of our eight endorsed races won, helping ensure SF keeps rolling forward on bike improvements.

  • District 1 (Richmond): Eric Mar - WIN!
  • District 3 (Downtown, Russian Hill): David Chiu - WIN!
  • District 5 (Western Addition, Japantown, Haight, Inner Sunset): #1 Christina Olague, #2 Julian Davis - Congratulations to Supervisor-Elect London Breed!
  • District 7 (West of Twin Peaks): Norman Yee - WIN!
  • District 9 (Mission): David Campos - WIN!
  • District 11 (Outer Mission/Excelsior): John Avalos - WIN!
  • BART Board of Directors District 9: Tom Radulovich - WIN!

Now, your SF Bicycle Coalition staff will be working hard to make sure the funding from proposition B goes to better bicycling in parks and setting meetings to discuss district priorities with each of the winners. Thanks to all of our members who Biked the Vote this year.

Opportunities to Join Bicycle Advisory Committees

Love bicycling? Want to shape the future of bicycling in San Francisco more directly, or improve bike access on Caltrain? There are openings on the City's Bicycle Advisory Committee and the Caltrain Bicycle Advisory Committee for San Francisco residents. Video: First-Ever Sunday Streets Event Transforms Downtown Berkeley

Last month, Sunday Streets made its debut in the East Bay! More than 40,000 people flooded 17 blocks in Berkeley for car-free, open streets fun. As this Streetfilm shows, the event was undoubtedly a huge success. We're thrilled to see Sunday Streets expanded in the Bay Area!

Here in SF, we wrapped up an awesome Sunday Streets season that included multiple events in the Mission. Enormous thanks to Sunday Streets Volunteer Coordinator, Liza Pratt, and our awesome interns D. Jan, Will, Kristal and Trafton for helping make the season such a huge success.
