Bike the Vote Tomorrow, November 6

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 6 is Election Day and we are counting on all our members to help Bike the Vote! For weeks, we've been sharing our endorsed candidates and recommending a Yes on Proposition B for cleaner, safer parks -- and now it's time to act.

This election is critical -- San Francisco is on its way to becoming a leader in bicycling innovations and safety. But, we can only keep that rolling with the support of folks in City Hall.

How much do the Board of Supervisors have a say in better bicycling? Well, just this week -- the amazing Fell and Oak bikeways project began. And, it's clear that the city is moving quickly on this important project thanks to the very consistent support from Supervisors Eric Mar and Christina Olague for Fell and Oak Bikeway, who have spoken at meetings, and instructed the SFMTA to prioritize this project. They've spoken up for you, and now it's your turn to help keep these champions in office.

Be sure to head to your polling place or vote at City Hall before 8:00 PM, and vote for the following candidates:

  • District 1 (Richmond): Eric Mar
  • District 3 (Downtown, Russian Hill): David Chiu
  • District 5 (Western Addition, Japantown, Haight, Inner Sunset): #1 Christina Olague, #2 Julian Davis
  • District 7 (West of Twin Peaks): Norman Yee
  • District 9 (Mission): David Campos
  • District 11 (Outer Mission/Excelsior): John Avalos
  • BART Board of Directors District 9: Tom Radulovich
  • YES on Proposition B: Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond

Polls are open from 7:00 AM until 8:00 PM. If you are in line to vote when the polls close, you are eligible to cast your ballot -- you cannot be turned away. You do not need to have any form of ID, just your signature. Any San Francisco resident can vote at City Hall either Monday or Tuesday.

Fell Street Bikeway is Underway!

It's true - just weeks after the SFMTA Board unanimously approved the Fell and Oak Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project, crews are already getting to work. You may have noticed some of the parking additions on Baker Street and grinding of Fell Street. Striping begins this week on this crucial bikeway that links the Wiggle and the Panhandle! Thanks to the SFMTA for acting fast. Completion of the full project is expected to last at least 6 months. To see the full implementation schedule click here.

Let's Get Visible with Bike Lights

It's been a couple days since the sun began setting at 5 pm, and your friends at the SF Bicycle Coalition want to be sure you are well lit up through the winter season. California law requires a white headlight, a rear red light or reflector and yellow/white reflector on sides and/or pedals (reflective whitewalls count). If you don't have the lights you need, use your SF Bicycle Coalition membership card to get a discount on lights at your favorite bike shop. See sfbike.org/discounts for locations.

Additionally, the SF Bicycle Coalition is proud to partner with the SF Municipal Transportation Agency to distribute lights to people who are biking after dark without them, and lighting them up with a free set of lights. We were out last week and distributed hundreds of lights, along with tips for safe night riding. If you would like to be one of our light station heroes and install lights this Thursday, Nov. 8th or Thursday November 15th, from 5-7pm, please sign up online to volunteer. The locations are being kept under wraps in an effort to serve riders who truly need lights.

He will be joined by local City leaders sharing their lessons learned after recent visits to other model bicycling cities, including Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Seville.

Video: NY City is Back in Business Post-Sandy, Queens Mode-Montage

Last week, the New York Times reported that with the shutdown of subways and bridges, many New Yorkers were choosing biking as the best way to get around the city. On Thursday, when some subways and buses were up and running, the folks at Streetfilms took to the Queensboro Bridge to document how New Yorkers were getting to work, post-Sandy. Here's a really nice montage that shows the morning commute for those lucky enough to go back to work and pick up their normal routines in Sandy's wake. Our hearts go out to those still recovering from the storm's devestation.
