Educate, Activate, Calculate for a More Bike-Friendly Los Angeles County

Here at LACBC HQ we are bursting with pride with how much we've grown as an organization while contributing to the progress of making a more a bike-friendly Los Angeles.

LACBC needs to build on our foundation, supporting that growth and becoming an even stronger voice for ALL bicyclists in LA County. We have devised a three-part program to successfully build neighborhood level support for bicycle projects. This comprehensive program can be summarized as Activate, Educate, Calculate

To successfully staff and implement this program we need to raise $125,000.

Bike Updates from Around the County: Beverly Hills City Council Unanimously Approves Bike Route Pilot Program

Beverly Hills: This week, the Beverly Hills City Council unanimously approved the Bike Route Pilot Program. Brace yourselves for bike lanes on Burton Way and Crescent Drive! The Patch reports that Vice Mayor John Mirisch said, "It's about time that we get with it when it comes to being bike-friendly. This certainly isn't as extensive as we had hoped, but it's a start." Read more in the Beverly Hills Patch.

And if you'd like to get involved in creating a more bike-friendly Beverly Hills, join our local chapter Better Bike Beverly Hills and become a Better Bike member with your LACBC membership.

Alhambra: The City of Alhambra has released the draft bike plan for public review at alhambrabikeplan.com. City staff will then present the plan at a City Council study session on Monday, November 19, at 5:30 PM at the Alhambra Civic Center Public Library's Ruth Reese Hall. Come out to supply feedback and make sure that the plan provides safe routes for bicyclists! More info here.

Long Beach: More public meetings will be held for the Daisy-to-Myrtle Bike Path to offer stakeholder the chance to provide input. According to Brian Addison of LA Streetsblog, the proposed path would stretch from "the northern tip of the 9th District where Long Beach meets Paramount all the way southward to the current court house downtown." The next three meetings are:

- Monday, November 19 at 7:30PM in Veterans Park located at 101 E 28th Street.
- Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00PM in Drake Park, located at 951 North Park Circle.
- Wednesday, November 21 at 6:00PM in the Rescue Mission, located at 1335 Pacific Avenue.

Court System Fails Alan Deane and His Family

We are disappointed to report that Sidharth Misra, the driver who killed Alan Deane as Alan was riding his bicycle on Colorado Blvd. in September 2011, was given a light sentence on November 13 in the Pasadena Superior Court. As we suspected before the hearing, the terms of the sentence were predetermined by a plea bargain deal in which Misra was convicted of Reckless Driving. His sentence included 10 hours of community labor, 400 hours of community service, 3 years probation, a few small fines, and restitution that has still not been confirmed (but was estimated to be around $4,000). Misra still keeps his driver's license.

Somehow, the suspension or revocation of a person's driving privilege must become automatic in cases like this. It would be a step in the right direction towards making the punishment fit the crime, and would be an incentive for people to simply drive more carefully.

Support LACBC on Climate Ride California or NYC-DC 2013

How can you enjoy an incredible 5-day bicycle ride in Northern California or on the East Coast while supporting LACBC? Climate Ride - the nation's largest environmental cycling event and 'green conference on wheels' is coming.

The exciting part for LACBC is that anyone who signs up for the ride gets to choose which organization they will be raising money for - and you can choose LACBC!

First you register, reach the fundraising minimum and train for the ride, then come along and discover why Climate Ride is the premiere green event in the country. Amazing riding, epic scenery, and great speakers all combine to make this a remarkable experience.

Climate Ride California (May 19-23, 2013) is a 5-day, fully-supported bicycle ride from Fortuna to San Francisco under towering redwoods, through the Russian River Wine Country, and along the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route - one of the most scenic coastlines in the world. Join the LACBC Team or make a general team donation.

Climate Ride NYC-DC (Sept. 21-25, 2013) is a grand cycling adventure that connects two of the nation's most important cities - New York and Washington, DC - by bicycle. The ride begins with an exciting departure from Manhattan by ferry, then travels through charming towns in rural New Jersey and Amish Country. The finale is a hero's welcome and rally at the steps of the US Capitol.

Climate Ride also features nightly speakers who focus on bicycle advocacy, sustainability, and renewable energy. If you are interested in forming and joining the NYC-DC team, please contact Kelly Martin at kelly@la-bike.org.

Find out more and register at www.climateride.org. If you have questions about joining the LACBC team or donating to the team, please contact Kelly Martin at kelly@la-bike.org

ACTION ALERT: Ride Lankershim

Ride Lankershim is an LACBC Valley Bike Ambassador campaign to advocate for proposed bike lanes on Lankershim and Cahuenga as part of the 2010 Bicycle Master Plan.

The addition of bike lanes on Lankershim will accent the people-oriented district this community has become and will ultimately make the area a more vibrant and livable community. Having bike lanes on Cahuenga will also address a gap in connectivity between the Valley and Hollywood communities.

Join us in taking action! Spread the word to your friends who live in the area. Here's what you can do to help:

RideLankershim

What's Ringing Our Bike Bells: Not-Cyclists

Bikes are good for business! We've read many articles about why bike infrastructure is good for business and we're working with businesses for the Ride Lankershim campaign, but we think Bikeyface does a great job of summarizing why in three fun illustrations. First of all, it can sometimes be difficult for business owners to recognize that they already have people riding and walking to their businesses because they have a preconceived notion of what a cyclist looks like. People riding bikes and walking are also more likely to stop and check out a business.

Check out Not-Cyclists, and print it out to present to a business next time it turns down a bike rack request or is afraid of losing car parking due to the addition of a bike lane.
