Fell and Oak - Decision Today!

Wow -- we've passed on the hundreds of heart-moving support letters from you, our members, and businesses near Fell and Oak Street and are at the SFMTA Board Hearing today for the final decision. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and Twitter feed for updates on this important decision. We can't thank our members enough for helping drive this campaign forward. And thanks to the Lower Haight, North of Panhandle Neighborhood Associations and WalkSF for showing their strong support, and Supervisor Olague for ensuring this project is prioritized among various City Departments. We're hopeful to be able to share good news with you later today! See sfbike.org/fell for more details on the project.

Ride and Lunch With Gary Fisher October 21

Join mountain bike legend Gary Fisher and Leah Shahum, Executive Director of the SF Bicycle Coalition, on a gorgeous 40 mile ride in Marin. After you work up a sweat on the ride, you and the small group will pedal to Greens Restaurant for an incredible lunch prepared by Greens' head chef and SF Bicycle Coalition member, Annie Somerville. Hurry! This ride will fill up quickly. RSVP for this incredible biking experience: sfbike.org/rsvp.

Annual Member Meeting October 22

Come one, come all to our 2012 annual member meeting: Monday, October 22nd from 6-7:30 pm at our office (833 Market Street, 10th Floor). We will be sharing our progress to date on our new member-driven strategic plan, and what to expect in 2013. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and give comments on the work we do on behalf of the 12,000 members of the SF Bicycle Coalition. We want to hear from you! After the meeting, join Neal Patel, our Community Planner, for a ride along Polk Street to hear more about this specific project. RSVP for the member meeting to Kit Hodge at kit@sfbike.org by Thursday, October 18.

Last Sunday Streets of Season This Weekend

The 2012 Sunday Streets season is going out with a bang. We'll be biking, walking, dancing and playing on a nw route in the Excelsior and Outer Mission on Sunday. See map at sundaystreetssf.com.

Family Biking Fun! Alongside our ever-popular Freedom from Training Wheels (11-2pm at Mission and Ruth Street), we'll be hosting a Family Biking Workshop at Sunday Streets (1:3-2:30 pm at Mission and Ruth Street). If you're a parent, or are just curious about family biking, come by and learn best practices on how to start biking with your family.

Volunteer for Sunday Streets: Show your appreciation for Sunday Streets by volunteering for a 3-hour shift. All volunteers get a limited edition Sunday Streets t-shirt and free lunch. Sign up now at sundaystreetssf.com/volunteer.

Other ways you can help make the last Sunday Streets of the year a resounding success:

  • Street Teams: Have a few daytime hours October 17? Help hang hundreds of No Parking signs along the route to keep it clear for event day. Sign up by emailing sundaystreets@sfbike.org.
  • Help the next generation learn to bike: Teach kids to pedal at the Freedom From Training Wheels Workshop at Sunday Streets. We will train you. Email Grace to volunteer.
  • Talk about our work to people at Sunday Streets: Join the SF Bicycle Coalition under the orange tent at Sunday Streets and talk to people about our work! If you are a trained Bicycle Ambassador, email Trafton.
Sunday Streets is sponsored by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Livable City, the nonprofit fiscal sponsor of Sunday Streets responsible for the day-to-day management of the program. We are proud that the Sunday Streets Volunteer Program is managed by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

Wanted: Great Ideas to Improve Polk Street

The SF Bicycle Coalition is reaching out to our members, residents, businesses, and cultural groups along Polk Street to re-think this amazingly diverse and vibrant street. We want to see small businesses thrive and improve safety for people who travel on this corridor - and are excited by the city's plans to repave and improve transportation and streetscape elements on Polk from Union Street to McAllister. Interested in joining the discussion? We've got lots of opportunities for you to get involved. See sfbike.org/polk for more info.

Welcome Chema, Bilingual Community Organizer

We are excited to welcome Chema Hernandez Gil to the SF Bicycle Coalition staff in the role of Community Organizer. Chema will be working on a variety of campaigns and programs to help more San Franciscans who identify as Latino and/or Chicano bike or bike more often. Chema brings an impressive background in organizing, neighborhood direct service and media here in San Francisco, and around the world, in multiple languages. And he of course loves to bike; he recently took a 400 mile bike tour through central Mexico. We hope that you'll get to meet Chema in person soon at one of our many upcoming events. Please share your questions or thoughts by e-mailing him at chema@sfbike.org.

Video: The Inaugural National Women's Bicycling Summit

In September, some of our staff attended the first ever National Women's Bicycling Summit in Long Beach, California. The summit brought together women bicycle advocates from across the country to talk about ways to help bridge the gender gap in bicycling. While many women commute by bike in San Francisco, they are still a minority of daily riders. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is working to change that, through teaching women's bicycle eduction class, teaching more women to bike in our Learn to Ride classes, and Connecting the City with safe, separated bikeways that welcome more people to bicycling. Check out this great video from Streetsfilm, recapping the terrific and hopefully annual Women's Bicycling Summit.
