We recently heard that the one-way separated bikeway option has garnered the most support from neighbors and people who have attended the 2nd Street community meetings. Thanks to all our members who have attended the two design meetings. We're looking forward to the third and final meeting in November (date TBD) to get more details on the proposal. You've probably heard the fantastic news that the Fell and Oak Safety Project was unanimously approved at the SFMTA Board of Directors a few weeks ago. We're still excited over the decision and so grateful for our members support in getting this crucial project approved! While the entire list of pedestrian and bicycle improvements will take roughly 6 months to implement, on-the-ground changes will start soon. Say goodbye to the too-skinny Fell Street bike lane, because it'll be gone soon. Click here to find out more. Speaker Series: Copenhagen's Bicycle Manager Please join us next Thursday, November 8, in welcoming Andreas Røhl, Copenhagen's Bicycle Manager, and learning of the successes and challenges in one of the world's most bicycle-friendly cities. Mr. Røhl has spent much of the past year in Vancouver, Canada helping the city step up its plans for greater accessibility by bike and foot. He will be joined by local City leaders sharing their lessons learned after recent visits to other model bicycling cities, including Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Seville. Just One More Week to Bike the Vote This election is down to the wire, and all of our endorsed candidates are calling on SF Bicycle Coalition members to help Bike the Vote! Campaign staff are working day and night, and they need volunteers in so many ways. Holding signs on street corners, phone banking, door knocking, data entry -- whatever you're comfortable with, and ready to try. This Saturday, each of our endorsed candidates are holding major mobilizations at 10:00 AM. So, head to any of these campaign offices on Saturday morning, or stop in any time between now and election day -- November 6th. Be sure to tell them the SF Bicycle Coalition sent you! And if you are one of our wonderful members who lives in the East Bay, vote YES on Proposition B1 for increased funding for bike/ped projects in Alameda County. And join us for a Prop B Parks Bond Fundraiser on November 1. Daylight Savings Ends Sunday: Light Up the Night! Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, and we don't want you to get caught in the dark without bike lights. California law requires a white headlight and rear red reflector and yellow/white reflector on sides and/or pedals (reflective whitewalls count). If you don't have the lights you need, use your SF Bicycle Coalition membership card to get a discount on lights at your favorite bike shop. See sfbike.org/discounts for locations. During these darker months, we'll also be out installing bike lights for those who are riding without them. We are proud to partner with the SFMTA and the SFPD to distribute lights to people who are biking without them. If you would like to be one of our light station heroes and install lights on November 8, November 15, or later this month, from 5-7:00pm, please sign up online to volunteer. The locations are being kept under wraps in an effort to light up riders who truly need lights. Winterfest is one of the largest local bike-related events of the year with over 1,200 attendees and is a great way to support the vital work the SF Bicycle Coalition is doing to make San Francisco a great place to live, work, and play. Tube Times Distribution: We're recruiting trusty volunteers to help distribute newsletters on an ongoing basis. Duties include picking up the newsletters (at any of three locations) and dropping them off at your assigned shop, every six weeks. Video: How the Dutch Got Their Cycle Paths The Netherlands is known for its incredible bicycle infrastructure and bicycle-centered way of life. But it wasn't always that way. Like most countries, the Netherlands was very car-centric, with little open space for people to walk or bike. But that all changed in the 1970s. Check out this terrific video about How the Dutch Got Their Cycle Paths, and how the oil crisis, public protests and traffic fatalities all led to the Netherlands becoming the bicycling city it is today. Our instructors will teach you and your children how to prepare and ride to school or beyond, including practice on a car-free space and on regular city streets with biking facilities. Parents with children of all ages are welcome, including children riding independently. All people under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring your own bikes and helmets. Ride from 17th and Castro to the fascinating Recycle Central Materials Recovery Facility at Pier 96.
