Governor Brown Signs 2 Bike Bills into Law, Vetoes the 3-Foot Passing Bill

AB 2245 has been signed by Governor Brown, meaning that the process for implementing  will be more efficient with an exemption
of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Bike facility projects will still require traffic and safety impact assessments and related hearings, but full Environmental Impact Reviews (EIRs) will not be required. Thanks to LADOT and Metro for pushing for this law.

AB 819 was also signed by Governor Brown and requires Caltrans to develop an 'experimentation' committee and process for new bikeway designs. AB 819 may allow for some infrastructure project that might normally be delayed to go forward. This new law will help California incorporate innovative bikeway designs like cycletracks, green paint, etc.

As you may have heard, Governor Brown unfortunately has vetoed AB 1464, also known as the 3-foot passing bill, citing liability concerns about motorists crossing the double-yellow line. We share in CalBike's disappointment. If you want to voice your displeasure to Governor Brown, please contact him.

You can read more about these bike bills at Los Angeles Streetsblog.

What's Ringing Our Bike Bells: I Put My Bike on the Bus
I Put My Bike On The Bus
I Put My Bike On The Bus

This Sunday's CicLAvia presents the perfect opportunity to encourage your friends and family who may not normally ride their bikes to ride the streets of Los Angeles free of motor vehicles. Our newsletter has a link to directions on how to get to CicLAvia, including several light rail options. But what if you want o put your bike on the bus?

We suggest two things for you travelling by the powerful bus and bike combo: 1) check out this Metro guide to putting your bike on the bus before you board, and 2) listen to this song "I Put My Bike on the Bus" out of Vancouver to pump you up!

(Editor's note from Carol: A bus driver laughed at me the first time I put my bike on the bus because it took so long. To all the bike-on-bus-riding rookies out there: it'll get better.)
