JPL Arroyo Seco The Arroyo Seco, Rockets, and the Growth of Los Angeles

"Whether it was for the idyllic landscapes such as the Arroyo, or the industry that was born in the Arroyo, Los Angeles has grown by capturing the imagination of millions," writes Lorne Platt. In this column from the "AAG Newsletter," Platt attributes the origin of Los Angeles' growth, at least in part, to the Arroyo Seco and a group of students who attempted to test a rocket motor in the 1930s. AAG Calls for Participation in Geography Careers Events

The AAG is sponsoring a special set of panel discussions, mentoring sessions, and workshops related to careers and professional development for geographers at its upcoming Annual Meeting in Los Angeles from April 9 to April 13, 2013. For each of these activities, the AAG seeks individuals representing a diverse range of employment sectors, organizations, academic and professional backgrounds, and racial/ethnic/gender perspectives to discuss trends and issues affecting geographers' careers. Pacific Electric Building, LA How Successful Planning Changed Downtown L.A.

The heart of downtown Los Angeles has undergone a remarkable transformation since the mid-1990s. According to an essay by Ken Bernstein in the new book,
Planning Los Angeles, edited by David C. Sloane, a provision inserted into the city's zoning code played the most important role in revitalizing downtown L.A. This article, an adapted and condensed excerpt from the book, recounts the role the city's Adaptive Reuse Ordinance played in changing downtown Los Angeles. Read more

Abstracts, Proposals for AAG Annual Meeting are due Oct. 24

The AAG reminds presenters and organizers that the deadline to submit proposals and abstracts for its 2013 conference is Oct. 24. The AAG Annual Meeting in Los Angeles will be held April 9-13, 2013. Visit the meeting portal at www.aag.org/annualmeeting to register and for more information on themes, speakers, and calls for papers. Read more.  
Search Annual Meeting Abstracts Online

 

Organize your participation in the AAG Annual meeting with the easy-to-use online search features available on the conference website. Individual abstracts may be viewed as soon as they have been submitted, and session organizers may post their proposed sessions for viewing. All visitors, including non-members, may search proposed sessions. Presenters can also match an abstract to sessions that have been posted and contact the organizers directly about being added to a session. Learn more.  

Propose a Field Trip or Workshop for the AAG Annual Meeting

 

Field trips and workshops offer Annual Meeting attendees unique opportunities to interact with colleagues with similar interests while learning about the rich cultural and physical geography of Los Angeles and Southern California. The AAG invites anyone attending the upcoming conference in April to organize informative field trips in and around the L.A. area. Field trip proposals are due Nov. 1. Learn more.

The weeklong conference is expected to host more than 8,000 geographers from around the world and feature over 4,000 presentations, posters, workshops, and field trips by leading scholars and researchers. The AAG Annual Meeting is an interdisciplinary forum open to anyone with an interest in geography and related disciplines.
