Smooth Pavement on Market St. Starting Now!

If you're one of the thousands of people who bike to work on Market Street, you know how bumpy and unsafe the pavement on this key biking corridor is. Well, we've got some great news for you…

Thanks to the advocacy of your SF Bicycle Coalition staff, the City will be repairing and repaving large sections of Market Street this month, creating a smoother, safer ride for you. Huge thanks to the Department of Public Works and the San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Agency for prioritizing this important project and making the daily bike commute safer and smoother for thousands of San Franciscans.

We heard from many of you that Market Street pavement was your number one concern, so we made it our focus. SF Bicycle Coalition staff literally walked every block of Market with the DPW, pointing out the most unsafe areas for those of us biking. The initial repaving was a simple patch job over a few small areas, and after working with the City, we helped expand the repaving to 30 locations, and over 15,000 square feet of new pavement. Repaving is Sept. 10-23, and work will happen at night to reduce disruptions to your commute. New pavement has already been laid down in a few locations, and we'll be keeping an eye on the streets to make sure that all of those unsafe spots get fresh and smooth pavement.

Ushering in this smoother pavement is only one part of our Market Street work. Your SF Bicycle Coalition continues our work to build a better Market Street, with a continuous green, separated bikeway -- a project slated to begin in 2016. But we knew you couldn't wait until then for smoother pavement so we've been working hard to win near-term improvements. See YOU in the smoother bikeway!

If great improvements like this Market Street repaving make a difference in your ride, please consider giving to our summer fundraising campaign. We're working to get smooth pavement and separated bikeways on other streets that matter to you--and that takes a lot of resources. We are only $3,000 short of our fundraising goal. Please help us reach that goal, and ensure that you're riding on smoother and safer streets all across the city.

Speak up in September for Bikeways That Matter to You

The SF Bicycle Coalition's Connecting the City campaign aims to connect you, your neighbors, and your family to all the places you want to go on bicycle in San Francisco. We've prioritized our advocacy efforts on working with the City to make biking better on the routes you take most often.

As a result the City will be spending millions of dollars to upgrade key bike routes in the coming years, and is now gathering community feedback and making decisions on the future of three key bike routes:

  • Masonic Avenue - The SFMTA Board of Directors will make a final decision on the Boulevard proposal for Masonic Avenue. Speak up before September 18. Click here to find out how -->

  • 2nd Street - Are you excited to see the proposals for a redesigned 2nd Street? Want to ensure safe and protected bikeways, sidewalks, and intersections are included? Come to the September 20 community meeting to make it happen. Click here to find out how -->

  • Polk Street - The SFMTA is kicking off a planning effort to overhaul Polk Street from McAllister to Union streets. Mark your calendar for a September 26 community meeting and read more here -->

How will YOU help to ensure these routes are safe to bike on?

Email Trafton to RSVP for either of these events!

Reclaim your streets on PARK(ing) Day 2012

It is time to locate your parking spot and design your own park! PARK(ing) Day is happening on Friday, September 21. This annual open-source global event inspires people to collaborate on temporarily transforming metered parking spaces into mini temporary public spaces. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco.

Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition -- through our Great Streets Project -- took this temporary annual event and created a long-tem solution for businesses and individuals to reclaim public space for public use through parklets. By working with the City to create an application process, we were able to broaden this concept of bringing public space back to public use. Check out all the parklets around town with this map, and start your own temporary one on Sept. 21!

If You're Riding up to Marin ...

Our partners in the North Bay, the Marin County Bicycle Coalition, would like you to know that because of increased traffic crashes and conflicts in some of Marin's towns, several police departments have significantly stepped-up enforcement of people on bike running red lights and stop signs. The town of Fairfax, which has been typically lax on such enforcement in the past, has been writing tickets by the dozens on some weekends. The Marin County Bicycle Coalition is urging anyone biking in Marin to be your best biking self, spreading the joy of bicycling and creating local goodwill by following the rules of the road. Thanks for being awesome, in Marin and everywhere.

New CEQA Bill Could Speed Up Bike Lane Projects

A California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) reform bill is heading to the Senate later this month that would exempt all bike lane projects throughout the state from the lengthy environmental review process they have been saddled with.

In the past, CEQA has stifled worthy bike lane projects that could help make bicycling safer, easier and more inviting to a larger share of Californians. The injunction of SF's bike plan was a result of CEQA, and this new bill would help prevent terrible delays like this from happening.

Our friends at the California Bicycle Coalition are working hard to get this bill passed and signed into law. To show your support for the bill, contact your state senator today.
