See You at Tour de Fat on Saturday!

Yahoo! This Saturday, New Belgium Brewery rolls its annual traveling bike carnival—Tour de Fat—into Golden Gate Park. And this year it's bigger, better, and more bike-tastic than ever!

Venezuelan band Los Amigos Invisibles will be bringing their mix of disco, acid jazz, funk and Latin rhythms to the stage. Bring your dancing shoes! Plus, live from New York—The Moth reading series will be hosting a special bike-focused reading!

As always, there are plenty of ridiculous games and bike fun to be had! Take a spin on the Whiskeydrome—a tiny velodrome. Plus, there's port-o-roki (port-o-potty karoaki), fire jumping bike acts and everybody's favorite—the slow bike race! Plus, the costumed bike parade kicks off at 11, registration at 10 am.

And the best part of it all—it's free! All proceeds from beer and merch supports the work of your SF Bicycle Coalition to make your daily ride better and safer.

Oh, and if you join or renew your membership at Tour de Fat, we'll give you a beer token. So swing by our tent—after valet parking your bike with us!

Can't wait until Saturday for beer and bike adventures? Join us at Zeitgeist on Thursday from 5-9pm, when we'll be raffling off a 2012 New Belgium Cruiser bike, and other bike-y prizes.

There are still a few spots left to volunteer for this Saturday's hootenanny, including Friday set-up, ID check, and pontificating about how much you love the work of the SF Bicycle Coalition under our big orange tent. Sign up to volunteer today.

Help Decide the Future of Polk Street and 2nd Street

Over the last few years, you've let us, the SF Bicycle Coalition, know that 2nd Street and Polk Street need major improvements to make biking safer and more relaxed. We've been working hard to make that happen and are thrilled that as a result of our advocacy, the city will be spending millions of dollars to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety on Polk Street and 2nd Street in the coming years.

Now, we need you to join your neighbors and speak up for what you want to see on these two corridors at upcoming community meetings in September.

  • September 20 - 2nd Street Improvement Project Community Meeting - Do you want to see safe and protected bikeways, expanded sidewalks, and more greenery on 2nd Street? Come to the September 20 community meeting to make it happen. Click here to find out how -->

  • September 26 - Polk Street Corridor Improvements Community Meeting - The SFMTA is kicking off a planning effort to redesign Polk Street from McAllister to Union streets. Mark your calendar for a September 26 community meeting - we'll need you at this initial meeting to advocate for a safe and protected bikeway on Polk. Read more here -->

The City is primed to bring huge streetscape and safety improvements to Polk Street and 2nd Street in the coming years - it's up to you to help decide what those changes look like. Hope to see you at one or both of the meetings this month.

Our 2012 Election Endorsements

It's time to Bike the Vote! The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is proud to announce our endorsements for the November 6, 2012 elections! 21 candidates responded to our candidate questionnaire with overwhelming support for safer streets and better bicycling; and the 12,000 members of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition weighed in on this important decision -- and now we have seven weeks to help keep San Francisco rolling forward.

This November, six seats on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and two BART Board of Directors positions are up for a vote. This election is an opportunity to ensure that we keep San Francisco rolling on its way to becoming a better, more bike-friendly city. The SF Bicycle Coalition has endorsed the following candidates and measures for the November 6, 2012 races:

  • District 1: Eric Mar
  • District 3: David Chiu
  • District 5 (ranked): #1 Christina Olague, #2 Julian Davis
  • District 7: Norman Yee
  • District 9: David Campos
  • District 11: John Avalos
  • BART Board of Directors District 9: Tom Radulovich
  • YES on Proposition B: Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond
Are you as excited as we are? Great -- because we'll be calling on you to help us hit the phones, hit the streets, and help get these bike-friendly candidates elected in the next couple weeks. If you're ready to help this November, email marc@sfbike.org and let us know! Together, we'll keep City Hall and BART leading the way for more and better bike lanes for everyone! Find out more about the candidates at sfbike.org/vote.

Video: Queens' Corona Plaza - A Community Place Rises

From parklets to plazas, open public spaces are popping up in cities around the country. New York City, which revamped Times Square, is now tackling smaller, more community-based open space. Check out this great Streetfilm about the latest endeavor: Corona Plaza in Queens. This new space, consisting of nothing more than moveable planters, seats, and gravel (read: inexpensive to build), is already filled with neighborhood families. Where would you like to see a plaza like this in San Francisco?
