September 4, 2012

"We used to hear a car crash about once a week — now they are very rare. We used to have empty storefronts, now all the stores are filled. There is no doubt that it used to feel dangerous crossing the street. That feeling is gone. "
-- Jeff Goldberg, San Jose Ave. resident on the impact of that street's road diet, Road Diets Used as Tool for Reclaiming Neighborhoods in San Francisco, San Francisco Examiner, August 23, 2012.

Last Day to Bike the Vote

Today is the final day to help the SF Bicycle Coalition decide which candidates to endorse for the upcoming election in November. Voters will select San Francisco's Supervisors and BART Board -- critical decisions in so many ways for the future of everyday bicycling in SF.

We asked the candidates a variety of questions, including "What will you do as Supervisor to realize the City's goal that 20% of trips in San Francisco be made by bicycle by 2020?"

In one of the races for the Richmond District, the three candidates answered as follows:

  • Sherman D'Silva: "I would focus on major corridors, making sure they have a designated bike lane, timed lights and resurfaced roadways."
  • David Lee: "I believe in the "Connecting the City" initiative and will work to find ways to build its suggested paths. I will also work hard to put more bicycle racks in the Richmond District, because I want to make it easier for bicyclists to use Richmond stores. Finally, I hope to expand Muni service into my district, which I believe will reduce the number of bicycle/car collisions in the city."
  • Eric Mar, incumbent: "If reelected, I will work with the SFBC to make sure we reach the 20% goal by improving our bike lane network, ensuring improved bicycle safety, and offering more opportunities like Sunday Streets for people to experience biking in a positive way."

Let us know which of these candidates you think answered this question best, and take a look at all of the different races then cast your vote and let us know who you think should receive the SF Bicycle Coalition's important endorsement.

Your voice is essential in guiding our decision, so please weigh in and let us know who you think should receive our endorsement. And remember: today is the final day to vote!

Get Ready for Tour de Fat

Yeehaw! Tour de Fat's right around the corner! See you at the annual bike and beer ballyahoo in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, September 22! Join us for this full day of music, bikes, beer and a roaring good time. Find all the details about this fun party at sfbike.org/fat.

There's fun to be had and some work to be done to make this annual bike-taculous event a success -- volunteering at the event pouring beer, sharing the SF Bicycle Coalition love under our big orange tent, and valet bike parking. Email Trafton if you're interested in delivering posters to spread the good word of Tour de Fat in your neighborhood.

Have you been thinking about ditching your car? Do it for the Tour de Fat and win $2,250 to create the bicycle ride of your dreams! One lucky winner (it could be you!) will become the center of the show as he or she gets up on stage, hands over their car keys, and pledges to live one year car-free. How do you enter to win? All the important details are here or head directly to the San Francisco Tour de Fat Facebook page and upload a 2-minute video entry why you should be chosen. While you're at it, RSVP to let your friends know where you'll be on September 22nd!

Masonic Avenue Improvements Gaining Momentum

Thanks to all our members who have sent in support letters for the once-in-a-lifetime set of bicycle, pedestrian, and greening improvements for Masonic Avenue. Every letter counts, so please send yours today. If you can come to the SFMTA Board hearing on Tuesday September 18 at 1pm in Room 400 of City Hall, please let Email Neal know.

Your hard-working staff at the SF Bicycle Coalition are gathering letters from members and letters from area businesses and neighborhood groups in the coming weeks. If we're successful, the SFMTA Board will approve the Boulevard Plan for Masonic Avenue giving the green light to a tree-planted median, raised separated bikeway and sidewalk extensions. One of the last remaining hurdles will be for the city to find funding for this multi-million dollar project - with your support, the SF Bicycle Coalition will continue to make Masonic Avenue a priority. Send in your letter today!

Bicycle Safety Education Classes Keep Rolling

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is proud to be the leading resource for street safety education in the city. Each year, we educate thousands of people in all of our classes -- from taxi drivers to people who are learnign to ride a bicycle for the first time ever.

We have an extensive offering of classes -- from Adult Learn to Ride classes to our 1-hour "Intro to Safe Cycling," which we held in Cantonese last weekend. We also host Traffic Skills 101 -- a comprehensive curriculum created by our National Partner, the League of American Bicyclists. If you're new to urban bicycling, or want to get more formal knowledge of how best to share the road, we've got lots of free classes, all across the city -- for everyone!

Sunday Streets Returns to the Western Addition

We're excited to be returning to the Western Addition/NOPA route this Sunday, September 9. Sunday Streets is sponsored by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Livable City. We are proud that the Sunday Streets Volunteer Program is managed by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. There are just two more events this year, but it's not too late to join the fun. Here are a few ways you can support Sunday Streets:

  • Be a Sunday Streets Superhero in the Western Addition: Volunteers get a free Sunday Streets t-shirt and lunch. Sign-up now to volunteer for Sunday Streets in the Western Addition on September 9th!
  • Be a Bicycle Ambassador, or Get the Next Generation Rolling: Spend some time at one of the most fun spots at Sunday Streets -- the SF Bicycle Coalition tent. Email Trafton to sign up as a Bicycle Ambassador or email Grace to help little ones learn to ride at Freedom from Training Wheels.

BART Pilot Ends -- for Now?

A huge thank you to the many volunteers who helped with outreach during the BART blackout lift pilot! And thanks to BART leadership and staff for stewarding this pilot. Last Friday was the last day of the pilot. We are now working with BART, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition and others to evaluate the findings of the pilot in the hopes of moving toward a permanent lifting of the blackout period -- soon. In the meantime, please help this campaign by spreading the word that the blackout period is back in effect while BART staff evaluates the results and feedback from its operations staff. If you haven't already, please take the pilot survey here.

Video: Cycling in the Netherlands in the 1950s

We usually feature videos about new bike projects and exciting advancements, but every once in a while a historic bike film comes our way that we just have to pass on. Check out this great vintage bike film from the Netherlands in the 1950s. We just loved seeing all the family biking footage, and the imaginative ways parents carried their little ones by bike (including a rocket-shaped trailer in the first few minutes of the video). For current best practices and tips on family biking today, check out our free Family Biking Guide, complete with a gear guide for pedaling parents.
