DECADE

Gregory Lind Gallery is pleased to present a new series of oil paintings on wood by New York artist Don Voisine. This is the artist’s second one-person show with the gallery.

Voisine’s paintings consist of central expanses of overlapping rectangles or squares painted in black and set against white fields. The artist’s hard-edged forms are circumscribed by vibrant bands of contrasting colors. His smooth surfaces, however, are not completely uniform; the complex and subtle interaction between transparency and opacity, as determined by the density of his paint, works to activate a dynamic and constantly fluctuating visual field.

With the introduction of complex angles, Voisine's pictorial planes are charged with a self-containment that renders them almost sculptural. The adherence to strict geometries, while summoning formalistic techniques, is simultaneously meditative in its evocation of endless depth, emptiness, and dynamic movement within specified constraints.

“I try to counter my own expectations,” Voisine has said. Facets such as weight, varying grades of color, glossy surfaces, and spatial illusion combine to create the paradox of movement interspersed with negative and positive space. Compositional elements including space, light, color, and form combine with his viewers' perception to stimulate a particular and individual experience beyond language.

Voisine's works are imbued with the elegant vernacular of architecture to delineate boundaries, expose points of access or exit, and enable his viewers to interact with his defined spaces. In these paintings, color activates an ostensible void and establishes a permeable sense of subjectivity between viewers and the art.

Don Voisine attended the Portland School of Art and Concept Center for Visual Studies in Portland, ME. He received an honorary BFA from the Maine College of Art in 2000. His recent solo exhibitions include Alejandra von Hartz Gallery, Miami, FL; McKenzie Fine Art, New York; and Icon Contemporary Art, Brunswick, ME. His recent group exhibitions include “FutureShock One Two,” Dr. Julius|AP Galerie, Berlin, Germany; "American Abstract Artists 75th Anniversary," ParisCONCRET, Paris, France; “Decade,” Gregory Lind Gallery; and “Cannonball,” Frosch & Portmann, New York. His work has been featured in Art in America, Art News, The New York Times, The New Criterion, Village Voice, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Chicago Tribune. Collections include: Cincinnati Art Museum, OH; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; National Academy Museum, New York; Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA; and Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME.
