"For a lot of us, it's not about the bike, it's about the bike as a means to an end, about being able to move around the city, and being connected to the liveliness of the neighborhoods."
-- Leah Shahum, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition Advocate's Vision for a Bike-Friendly City, Wall Street Journal, August 15, 2012.

Bike the Vote: Weigh in on Candidate Endorsements
It's time to Bike the Vote! Election day is November 6, and the voters will select San Francisco's Supervisors and BART Board -- critical decisions in so many ways for the future of everyday bicycling in SF. The SF Bicycle Coalition will be making an endorsement in the Supervisor Districts (odd numbers are up this election) and one BART Board seats. We're calling on you -- and all of our members -- to help us determine who should receive our influential endorsement. Click over to sfbike.org/vote to read the candidates' responses to our questionnaire on bicycling issues, and then let us know who you think should receive the SF Bicycle Coalition's endorsement. Current members can log in and cast your vote for the candidates you think would be the best.
Your voice is essential in guiding our decision, so please weigh in and let us know who you think should receive our endorsement.
We asked all the candidates to share how they would improve bicycling in San Francisco, and we've posted their responses online for you to read about their positions and cast your vote for our endorsement at sfbike.org/vote.
How Much Does Smooth Pavement & Bikeways Matter to You?
We've got a once-in-a-century opportunity that can't be missed. As you know, thanks to the $248 million streets bond we helped get passed last fall, more money than ever will be spent in improving our streets. While funding is in place, the plans are not.
The City, left to own devices, would likely use this funding to keep the status quo, missing the opportunity to invest in improvements that make bicycling – and walking – safer and more convenient for you. Once the pavement is laid down, there's no tearing it up to rebuild the streets better later.
Your SF Bicycle Coalition aims at maximizing this funding to push for better pavement AND more bikeways. And we need your financial boost to make it happen. Give a special gift today to ensure we get it right the first time around.
Have you ridden on 8th Street recently? Do you like it with smooth pavement AND separated bikeway? We do! Thanks to our efforts, we made this happen. We want more streets to be even better than 8th Street! Make a donation today for smooth pavement AND separated bikeways on more streets that you pedal on.
We Love Sunday Streets Volunteers
This year alone volunteers have donated over 1,900 hours of their time to help make Sunday Streets possible. From staffing the event, to hanging "No Parking" signs, to talking to businesses and neighbors before each event, they've done it all. These amazing volunteers have helped open over 15 miles of streets in San Francisco neighborhoods for people to bike, walk, recreate, and socialize. Help us say "Thank you!" at our Sunday Streets Volunteer Appreciation Party on Tuesday, August 28th, from 7-9pm. We hope you will join us to say thanks and raise a glass to our wonderful volunteers who make it all happen. RSVP here.
It's not too late to join the fun. Here are a few ways you can support Sunday Streets:
- Be a Sunday Streets Superhero: Volunteers get a free Sunday Streets t-shirt and lunch. Sign-up now to volunteer for Sunday Streets in Chinatown on August 26 or the Western Addition on September 9! We are proud that the Sunday Streets Volunteer Program is managed by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.
- Be a Bicycle Ambassador, or Get the Next Generation Rolling: Spend some time at one of the most fun spots at Sunday Streets -- the SF Bicycle Coalition tent. Email Trafton to sign up as a Bicycle Ambassador or email Grace to help little ones learn to ride at Freedom from Training Wheels.
- Share your thoughts: Sunday Streets is sponsored by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Livable City. Take a few moments to answer their brief survey about what you like and would like to see in the upcoming Sunday Streets.
Our Organization is Growing: Job Openings and New Hires
Today is the first day of work for our newest SF Bicycle Coalition staff, Eric Tuvel! We are thrilled to have Eric coming on-board as our in-house graphic designer. This is a new position for our organization, and we're so excited to have someone overseeing all of our visual and graphic design work.
Eric comes to us with an extensive background in graphic design and urban planning. In addition to creating all the awesome posters and flyers for events like Bike to Work Day and Golden Wheel, Eric will also be creating great renderings and visuals that envision a better, more bike and pedestrian friendly San Francisco. Welcome to the team, Eric!
We are hiring for four new positions to join our growing team. If you are passionate about bicycling, and have the skills for one of these positions, please send in an application to join our amazing team of hardworking staff.
Find out more about these jobs at sfbike.org/jobs.
Valet Bike Parking at America's Cup

"Hi. I'm Jason Serafino-Agar, your SF Bike Coalition's Safe Routes to School Coordinator. I work on helping families throughout San Francisco bike and walk to school, by teaching youth and family classes, organizing our annual Family Day and spearheading the ever-growing and awesome Bike to School Day.
This week I'm especially focused on back to school time, and making sure your students know the safest route to their school.
Please e-mail me at Jason@sfbike.org with your questions or comments about family biking. Your ideas and experiences are very important to this, and every, program."
Video: Competitive Bicycle Dancing!
With the Olympics behind us and the revelry of Tour de Fat just a month away, we thought this was a fitting time to showcase an awesome video about competitive bike dancing.
Check out the German team's amazing two-wheeled skills--including the epic 2-minute wheelie while balancing another person her shoulders and ending in, well, you'll see. Let's just say that after watching this video, you'll wonder why bicycle dancing is not an Olympic sport.
