Dear Kevin:

The November 2012 elections are a key moment for deciding how San Francisco will grow in the coming decade. The decisions we make today will affect us all for years to come. We need your voice to help make sure our streets will be great for bicycling.

Six seats on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and a BART Board of Directors seat are up for a vote this November. We need to elect the most bike-friendly candidates to keep San Francisco rolling on its way to becoming a better, more bike-friendly city.

Projects you care about -- like Fell and Oak Streets, Market Street, and Masonic Avenue are on the line. Will we have champions for these projects in City Hall?

For District 1 and all of the races, we asked all of the candidates to tell us in 75 words how they would help the city realize it's goal that 20% of trips in San Francisco be made by bicycle by 2020. Below is each of the District 1 candidate's responses, in alphabetical order:

  • Sherman D'Silva: "I would focus on major corridors, making sure they have a designated bike lane, timed lights and resurfaced roadways."
  • David Lee: "I believe in the 'Connecting the City' initiative and will work to find ways to build its suggested paths. I will also work hard to put more bicycle racks in the Richmond District, because I want to make it easier for bicyclists to use Richmond stores. Finally, I hope to expand Muni service into my district, which I believe will reduce the number of bicycle/car collisions in the city."
  • Eric Mar, incumbent: "If reelected, I will work with the SFBC to make sure we reach the 20% goal by improving our bike lane network, ensuring improved bicycle safety, and offering more opportunities like Sunday Streets for people to experience biking in a positive way."

As one of the 12,000 members of the SF Bicycle Coalition, you have an opportunity to let us know which candidate do you think should be endorsed for this important race, and others. Read more answers from candidates in all the races -- then cast your vote by Tuesday September 4th -- at sfbike.org/vote.

Please take a moment to review the candidate responses and cast your vote for the best bike candidates. Your opinions -- along with the rest of our members -- are the foundation of our endorsements and all of our decision-making. You will use this email address as your log-in and you can vote in any of the races.

Thank you so much for being a member of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and helping make our city a better place to live, work, and bike.

Sincerely,

Leah Shahum
