| Bike Updates from Around the County: Glendale Bike Plan Heads to City Council  
Glendale: Glendale's final draft of Bike Transportation Plan will be presented to City Council for approval on Tuesday, August 28th, at 6 PM. The BTP is the product of several years of work by community members and city staff to create an extensive plan detailing bicycle infrastructure improvements in the City of Glendale. The full plan can be reviewed at the city's website at bikeglendale.org. Local chapter Walk Bike Glendale encourages you to send an email to City Council or attend the meeting on Tuesday to state your support for bicycle improvements in the city. The City Council needs to hear from you! Send an email to City Council by e-mailing citycouncil@ci.glendale.ca.us; manoukiancouncil@gmail.com. See more information on the Walk Bike Glendale website. Culver City: The Ballona Creek Bike Path will be closed starting Monday, August 27 through Friday, August 31 from 7 AM to 4 PM between the National Boulevard and Overland Avenue entrances. During this temporary closure, maintenance will be conducted including: tree trimming, graffiti removal, concrete repair, and the addition of trail markings using thermoplastic. Signage will be posted at the Overland, Duquesne and National entrances to alert path users about this closure. More info on the LADOT Bike Blog. Culver City: Last month, we announced that Culver City received its first bike corral on Washington and Jean, and now the City of Culver City is holding a celebration! Join the City on Monday, August 27 at 10:00 AM. Please plan to meet on the sidewalk next to the bike corral, grab a cup of coffee or bite to eat at nearby businesses, and hear a few words from the City about its work to help make the City more bicycle-friendly! Long Beach: The Los Angeles County Flood Control District will be performing environmental clean-up activities adjacent to the Los Angeles River Bike Path between Pacific Coast Highway and Ocean Boulevard from August 27 to September 7. The Bike Path from Pacific Coast Highway to Anaheim Street will be closed from approximately 8 AM to 3 PM weekdays beginning August 27 and lasting until approximately August 31. Riders will be detoured onto San Francisco Avenue, one block east of the path. From Anaheim Street to Ocean Boulevard there will be intermittent delays due to these activities. Carson: The City of Carson has been awarded the 2012 Caltrans Community-Based Transportation Planning (CBTP) Grant to create the city's first Master Plan of Bikeways since 1978! The first community "ideas and suggestions" meeting for the Master Plan of Bikeways will be on Saturday, September 8 from 11 AM - 12:30 PM at the Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center, Multi-Purpose Room #111. Also, complete a short online survey to share your thoughts on bicycling in Carson. More info. |
| ACTION ITEM: Urge the State Assembly to "Give Me 3" Senate Bill 1464, the 3-foot passing bill, was passed by California Senators, and now we need the Assembly to do the same tomorrow, August 24th.
SB 1464 will require drivers to give bicyclists at least three feet of clearance when overtaking them from behind in the same lane. By giving drivers a clear, measurable, objective standard for how to pass bicyclists safely, Senate Bill 1464 will help prevent the leading cause of bicyclist fatalities. And by making our roads safer, SB 1464 will help more would-be bicyclists confidently choose to ride a bike as everyday transportation. Twenty-one other states already have laws that specify a minimum passing distance for drivers passing bicyclists. | ACTION ITEM: Continue Sending Letters of Support for a Better, Safer Expo Bikeway  Thank you to everyone who has responded to last week's call to action! You all have sent in over 100 letters of support to make sure that Phase II of the Expo Bikeway is implemented to make riding your bike there safer. The Expo Bicycle Advisory Committee met on Tuesday morning to discuss some of the design issues identified, including Pico/Gateway and Centinela. There is not yet consensus among Expo Authority staff that design changes need to occur. As LACBC works with Expo and other stakeholders, please continue to send in your letters to the Expo Board if you have not done so already. We will provide further updates as developments occur. Use our sample letter on the LACBC blog or your own words to email the Expo Board. |
ACTION ITEM: Urge Governor Brown to Sign SB 1201, the LA River Access Bill SB 1201, the Friends of the LA River (FoLAR)'s Los Angeles River Expanded Public Access Bill, is on Governor Brown's desk awaiting his signature. The bill will broaden the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works' 100-year-old mission of flood and stormwater management to include, for the first time, education and recreation. This bill lays the foundation for a vibrant river environment that will serve all the denizens of the watershed and make Southern California a richer, more verdant place to be.

Kick-Off Meetings for Neighborhood Bike Ambassador Program Happening Now
If you want to make your City of Los Angeles neighborhood a better place to ride, join our Neighborhood Bike Ambassador program! The Neighborhood Bike Ambassador program is a new way for LACBC members & volunteers to work on neighborhood-scale projects and organize local support for bike projects and LACBC campaigns in the City of Los Angeles. We have scheduled kick-off meetings for 5 different regions in the City of Los Angeles: Eastside/Northeast LA, Central LA, South LA, the Westside, and the Valley. | The Sunday FunGay Ride: A Celebration of Bikes and Gay LA 
Take a bike tour of gay LA led by LACBC Board Member Herbie Huff! This ride begins in Pershing Square in downtown LA and ends in West Hollywood, where we'll see if we can handle the infamous Hamburger Mary's Drag Queen Brunch. We'll take brief stops along the way to hear about 1) local queer history and 2) bike advocacy in West Hollywood with local chapter West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition. Ride will be relaxed and roughly 12-15 miles in length from Downtown LA to West Hollywood. Riders afterwards can ride with the group, ride back on their own, or take the Metro #4 bus back to downtown LA. Touring L.A. County with Where to Bike and the LACBC
When: Thursday, August 30; Ride starts at 5 PM and book party starts at 7 PM
Where: {pages} Bookstore - 904 Manhattan Beach Ave., Manhattan Beach, 90266
Join us to celebrate the recent release of Where to Bike Los Angeles with a bike ride and release party! We'll start with a leisurely 10-to-15-mile ride (mostly flat with a couple of short, easy climbs) through the South Bay beach communities with brief stops at points of interest. Families are welcome to join us, but kids must be at least 12 with on-street riding experience and accompanied by adults.
At the end of the ride, {Pages} in Manhattan Beach will host a book party at its shop with refreshments, a slide show, and book signing. Of course, the ride component of the evening's festivities is totally optional.

Volunteer for CicLAvia
LACBC is once again partnering with CicLAvia to organize the hundreds of volunteers needed to pull off LA's favorite car-free, open streets event. There is so much to do in the weeks leading up to CicLAvia, as well as on the day of October 7th. Canvassing began this week, inventories and office work get started next week. Hub volunteers, route angels and organizations for our Adopt-an-Intersection program are needed on the day of.

Over the past year we've been developing our Marshal Team, starting with Tour de Taste and the LA River Ride. We want it to grow into a force to be reckoned with, made up of strong riders with marshaling, bike mechanic, and first-aid skills. We will be hosting training rides, providing bike maintenance classes, first aid courses, and outfitting you with an official team jersey and all the bike tools you'll need along the way.

LACBC has had a great time partnering with Grand Performances for its series of bike valets this summer! And now, as all good things must come to an end, we come to our last weekend providing bike valet for Grand Performances. We would like to thank Grand Performances for encouraging folks to ride their bikes to their popular series and for inviting LACBC to provide bike valet.
We hope yo see you all this final weekend! To find our bike valet, enter California Plaza off of Grand Ave., walk up the steps south of Blue Cow, and find us in front of the Deloitte Building.

ArtCycle East Hollywood
