Cast your vote through September 3rd. Cookin' the Market Summer is here and that means one of the world's most loved fruits is readily available at your farmers’ market. Tomatoes are a wonderfully versatile fruit (yes, fruit!) that can be enjoyed fresh, cooked into a sauce, canned, or dried. One reason tomatoes taste so good is because they contain a substance called glutamate. Glutamate is a natural part of protein-containing food. It is what gives tomato sauce its mouth-watering savory flavor. You will find the sweetest and most nutritionally dense tomatoes during their peak seasons from July through September at your local farmers market. Choose from many colors, shapes, and sizes. Eat them whole, mix them in a caprese salad, make a bruschetta, or enjoy a cooling gazpacho. Or check out our Fresh Tomato Sauce with Angel Hair Pasta. ►Look for lots of cooking tips and tricks on the Cookin' the Market Facebook page! Fresh Approach PCFMA’s sister organization, Fresh Approach, has launched its 2012 VeggieRx program in partnership with two San Jose community organizations: Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) and Gardner Family Health Network. Fresh Approach provides “prescription” vouchers for fresh fruits and vegetables to low-income families at these clinics. During their bi-weekly clinic visits participants also attend an interactive nutrition education lesson and receive BMI measurements. The goal is to show that increasing fresh fruit and vegetable consumption leads to health benefits. Many participants have begun redeeming their vouchers at local markets: about fifteen families redeemed vouchers at the Alum Rock market alone the week they received their vouchers, a promising indicator of the power of programs such as VeggieRx to increase healthful food access. Farmers, clinicians, community partners, staff, and participants are all vital to program success. Volunteers who could assist with Vietnamese or Spanish translation during the clinic visits would be extremely helpful. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Katie Gronsky, at katiegronsky@freshapproach.org.
