Bekris Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of When Words Fail, an exhibition of paintings by Ethiopian artist, Mulugeta Tafesse. Mulugeta Tafesse's sparsely colored canvases speak in a quiet voice. They often convey a sense of longing which words cannot. With a moldy pastel palette he creates figurative works which seem slightly out of focus as if seen through gauze or reflecting a faded memory. His subjects are commonplace, a town square, a bicycle, a passenger seen through a windshield. His palette makes them wistful. Tafesse's use of space and ephemeral light contribute to the emotional impact of his canvases. In Whisper, for example, the closeness of his subjects draws the viewer in to their intimate conversation. Stolen light in Mulugeta Tafesse's Fog gives the canvas that confusing feeling of dense fog on a strange street. The half hidden face in Tea tells more than half a story. After completing his undergraduate degree in painting at the School of Arts and Design in Addis Ababa, Tafesse continued his studies in Sophia, Bulgaria, Antwerp, Belgium and then Tenerife, Spain. Throughout his life he has taught and lectured at various fine art institutions. While he is endlessly peripatetic, Tafesse has established a home base, setting up his studio in Belgium. |
