Dear Kevin,

We're very excited to invite you to a reception for Susan Burnstine, whose Absence of Being series is currently on exhibit in the gallery, on Saturday, May 5, from 2 to 5 pm. Susan will give a talk at about 3 pm during which we're sure she'll discuss not only the creative process behind her amazing images, but also how and why she makes her own cameras and lenses. We hope you'll join us.

Corden|Potts Gallery is located at 49 Geary Street, Suite 410, in San Francisco. Gallery hours are 11 am to 5:30 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays, and until 7:30 pm on the first Thursday of each month.

Talking about her Absence of Being series, Susan says, "This ongoing series explores how the past remains with us, if only in shadows. These images capture fleeting memories, spotted from the corner of an eye-memories that vanish the moment we turn to really look. And yet they remain, for the imprint remains with us. We are living in the present, but the past reminds us that it is part of us, too, as is the future, and we of them."

"With this body of work, as with my former series," Susan says, "I captured these visions entirely in-camera using a collection of hand-made film cameras and lenses that are frequently unpredictable and technically challenging." Explaining the cameras, she says they "are primarily made out of plastic, vintage camera parts and random household objects. The single-element lenses are molded out of plastic and rubber." She adds, "Learning to overcome their extensive limitations has required me to rely on instinct and intuition-the same tools that are key when trusting in the unseen."

Susan is an award-winning fine art and commercial photographer. Her fine art work is shown in galleries around the world and has been published widely. Susan's first monograph, Within Shadows, was released in Europe at the Venice Biennale as well as in the United States in 2011. The book earned the Gold Award for PX3 Prix De La Photographie Paris in the Professional Fine Art Books category and a Bronze overall.

We hope to see you on Saturday. It promises to be a fun and fascinating afternoon.
