Marc Katano, Daughters, 2011, 60 x 44 inches, acrylic on paper
Stephen Wirtz Gallery announces Penumbra, an exhibition of new paintings on paper by Marc Katano.
Presented are eight works rendered in acrylic paint and India and Sumi inks on large expanses of tactile Japanese and Nepalese handmade papers, continuing the artist’s ongoing investigation of the calligraphic stroke.
Katano works on the floor of his studio, using his fingers like a brush to create the background matrix of the painting. Swishing his hands in buckets of watery acrylics and inks, Katano applies his dense strokes in close proximity to one another until the paper’s textured surface is filled with rhythmic and nuanced patterns. Wielding a bamboo rod dipped in paint or ink, he then superimposes spontaneous graphic marks, drips, and inscriptions, rendered in hues that starkly contrast with the background palette, the energetic and elegantly tangled forms seeming to sweep, billow, and float along the surface.
Although the carefully cultivated line of Katano’s gestural mark may resemble forms from the natural world, a Ginko leaf perhaps, the mark exists as its own self-referential language, each line representing nothing more than its own creation, each piece finding meaning in the harmony of its own and unique internal structure.
Marc Katano states about his work: “The fundamental basis of my work is the act of inscription itself, engaging questions of texture and shape. Though my compositions are organic in form, they are inspired not by the emulation of nature, but by the physicality of human expression, as made manifest in the precise motions of Japanese calligraphy.”
Marc Katano (American, b. Tokyo, Japan, 1952) is a painter. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction from California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA in 1975.
